Thread: Cruz Lochrie Update (gucci 1) Posted: 04/01/2012 16:43:57

Just like to update everybody on Cruz's visit to the vet today for an x ray. The main reason for x ray at just under 4 weeks was, the vet felt that Cruz should be putting more weight on the fractured leg than he was.

Mainly good news from x ray.

Plate and screws into bone have not moved at all and are all very straight, which he seemed very pleased about. Bottom fracture starting to heal nicely, top fracrture a little bit behind in healing stage. However part of bone graft has come away at right hand side near top fracture, it seems to have seeped out of wound when he had the infection.

In reation to the pin, it had slipped down about an inch to the bottom of the joint which may have been restricting Cruz's movement in the whole joint, as well as making it uncomfortable for him weight bearing. The vet has now pulled the pin further up in the bone and cut at least an inch of off the pin, so it will improve his movement. The pin is now inside the skin so the wound can now heal over. This will make it more comfortable for Cruz and once healed ,he can go swimmimg which will be ideal for his progress.

Plan is for 5-6 20 minute walks per day, swimming once wound healed over, and he can go on the treadmill. Not to go back for 4 weeks. After next x ray in 5-6 weeks they will then decide if top fracture has healed enough to take the pin out.

So overall good day at the vets today.

Pamela and Cruz x

Wow Pamela, he looks brilliant!  So happy and raring to go, you must be thrilled.  OK, we know he has a way to go but what an improvement.  Thank you for letting us see the video.  Obviously, it is a lot of hard work and tlc from you but it is paying off.
Give Cruz a big hug from me, even though he doesn't know me!!

Re: Cruz Lochrie Update (gucci 1) Posted: 07/01/2012 14:10:02
Thanks for that Sandra and glad you liked it.

I was so pleased with his progress I felt I had to share it with everybody. Although it is 9 weeks from his accident, because the first operation did not work, technically he is only 4 weeks post op and another 4-5 weeks before they expect the fracture to heal, so taking all that into consideration he is doing very well.

I will keep you updated.

Re: Cruz Lochrie Update (gucci 1) Posted: 07/02/2012 07:41:56
Just like to give you an update on Cruz. I was back at the vet on Friday and he felt that he was more lame than he should be 8 weeks post op and he did not have as much leg extensions as they would hope, so arranged an x ray for Monday.

However the news was not good from the x ray, but various factors to take into account. The fracture has only showed minimal healing on both sites and the pin has... been irritating him causing swelling and internal irritation at the top of his leg. Also at the knuckle joint at the bottom of the leg (where they had drilled into before) has shown slow healing as well.

Beacuse of different influencing factors that could cause Cruz to be lame it was decided to take out the pin as it has always been irritating him and could be hammpering his weightbearing. The downside to this is less internal support for leg while fracture still got lots of healing still go. However this will put a bit more weight on the fracture site and if controlled ot could help with the fracture to heal.

The outcome is pin is out, the wound site had to be stiched due to the amount of swelling and irritation the pin caused. Cruz now back to being totally cage rested for the next 2 weeks , to ensure not too much pressure on the frature site in the first few weeks after the pin has been removed.

This is all a bit of a blow as I thought he was doing well, however they have not written off the possibility that he might recover, just that it is a waiting game now and it is going to take a lot longer than expected.

Back to vet in 2 weeks for physical examination and to see if he is less lame with the pin put.

Re: Cruz Lochrie Update (concal) Posted: 07/02/2012 11:50:01
Thank you for the update Pamela.  What a blow for you but your vet does sound as though he really knows what he is doing and is thinking of Cruz.  The waiting is awful, isn't it?  I had setbacks with my Connor and he came good in the end.  Please don't despair, keep your chin up, we are all thinking of you and wishing Cruz get well soon.  Love to you both.

Re: Cruz Lochrie Update (gucci 1) Posted: 21/02/2012 07:34:26
Thought I would update everybody on Cruz. My last post was 2 weeks ago when the pin came out, from then he has not been weight bearing at all and we both have had a terrible 2 weeks. Was back at the vet yesterday and the fracture was displaced, so that is why he was not weight bearing.

I asked to be refered to a specialist, John Ferguson and had a consultation late yesterday afternoon. Initially from the history he was not hopefull that he would consider operating but said he would not make any decision until he had seen the x-rays. Luckly I had starved Cruz before going to the vet in the morning just incase he needed sedated for any procedures, so they were able to sedate him and x-ray while we finished the consultation. The good news from the x-rays was that he felt there was no infection, there was no dead parts of bone and there was evidence that the bones had tried to heal. This ruled out 3 possible complication that would aid in his decision wheither to operate. He felt although this is the third operation there was a good chance there could be a positive outcome. he saidif I had come 1st time then he would have gave me 70/30 odds of sucess, now he would give 50/50 but on a very optimistic side of the 50%.

We discussed at length the trauma to the dog having another operation, the stress of the aftercare for me and should we go ahead with another operation. I didnt want to push any decision, although I want to do everything to save Cruzs leg I dont want to put him through an operation if the odds are not good enough, so asked if he would operate if it was his dog and he said he would give it 1 more go, but if this fails then the only option is amputation as it would not be fair to put the dog through any more. So I decided to agree to the operation to give Cruzs 1 more attempt to save his leg.

They have kept Cruz and will operate in the next few days once they get all the parts, said he would have to get custom made plates because of how he wants to plate the inside of the leg. Will let you all know how the operation goes.

ps thanks to Linda for doing a raffle as no of this is cheap, but Cruz is worth every penny.

Re: Cruz Lochrie Update (concal) Posted: 21/02/2012 11:09:46
Poor Cruz, having to have yet another operation.  Fingers and everything else crossed for a good outcome.  You are doing everything possible for him Pamela, and we are all thinking of you both.  Keep strong for Cruz

Re: Cruz Lochrie Update (gucci 1) Posted: 22/02/2012 19:09:01
Today was a very long day but good news is Cruzs operation went well.

They said he was fine with the anasthetic and came round well. What they have done is put a 3.5mm plate the whole lenghth of the bone with 11 screws in it, shaved off the ends of the bone to get good blood supply and put loads of bone graft in.

They said it was a bit tricky to start with because of all of the muscle, scar ti...ssue and nerves all wrapped together but they took there time to locate the nerves, to hopefully prevent any nerve damage. They also said they were very pleased with how sucessfull they managed to get the screws to grip, considering he has already had screws in the bone in previous operation. The plan was to possibly put a plate either side of the bone, but because of how tangled the muscle, scar tissue and nerves were at the first side they felt the risks were too high of possible nerve damage, also becuase the first plate fixed so well to the bone and was able to take so many screws they felt there was enough support for the bones without taking any further risks. John Freguson (the surgeon) said he feels the operation went slightly better that he expected and that he was pleased with the outcome.

They are going to keep him until monday so they can carry out the first few days rehabilitation.

So overall, so far so good, at the start of on another journey

Pamela and probably a sore Cruz x

Thread: Urgent home needed (whatsname) Posted: 22/02/2012 10:45:01
Posting this in the hope that there is someone out there who could help.  My vet telephoned me this morning to see if I knew of anyone who could rehome two border collies.  They are brother and sister and 10 years old.  The owner has developed alzimers and keeps forgetting to feed them etc.  She is due to be placed in a home as soon as a place is found.  On her good days, she is distraught about her dogs who she loves dearly.  The dogs are getting confused as this is the only home they have known and to separate them would cause further stress.  They have both been spayed/castrated and are very loving, good natured, healthy dogs who dote on each others company and only want somewhere safe to live and look after them in their declining years.  If there is someone who would consider helping these two lovely collies please contact me,  Bridget on 07796363688

I would be happy to help in providing them  a home at my kennels, until a permanant home for them together could be found.

Thread: Coltreiver Connexion 22/10/1996 ---18/2/2012 (coltreiver) Posted: 21/02/2012 11:46:59
On Saturday I had my beautiful Donya put to sleep when life suddenly became too much of a struggle for her. I brought this funny, clever, very sensitive little girl into the world and for over 15 years she has been so attached to me I should have called her "velcro". She absolutely hated travelling which together with her sensitivity meant she wasn't entirely happy in the ring so although she was C only at 3 yrs I retired her from competition. She loved all the exercises though; never ever failed scent and happily continued to do all the exercises(especially leaping high in the air on the DC down to stand) for the rest of her life.
Of all my dogs Donya had the most presence; always playing with her squeaky toys or her beloved "ring" which earned her the nickname "Nutty Knickers"--she certainly entertained many people with that game. Her other favourite was to put toys on Dens knee when he was "resting his eyes"(his words) and he would wake to find around a dozen toys on his knee. She also loved poking her nose in any bag or carrier that was around- could be quite embarrasing! Her forte was to bring a smile to people and she has certainly managed to do that especially to me these last 8 months since Den died and often at very low moments.
Although I still have my wonderful Duffy and Dara my home is too quiet and tidy now. I am absolutely heartbroken at the loss of my lovely little girl; sleep well sweetheart, I'm sure you will bring a lot of fun to Rainbow Bridge and your dad will be there to look after you forever.

Mum Margaret xx

Just a little note to  say how proud I am to be have shared so many fantastic times with little Donya.
Marg did a fantastic job getting Donya to C, but I know the joy that Marg, Kim and of course Den shared with Donya at home outshone anything she did in obedience. She will be remembered with a smile and goodness only knows what will happen in heaven now she is reunited with her Dad.
Run free Donya enjoy chasing your brother.
Our thoughts are with Marg and Kim at this very sad time.

Hi Carol, I sent you an e-mail before all this to confirm Okey, but it now clashes with my course up in the Midlands. I'm really sorry to have to cancel but it is just really unfortunate, if the distance wasn't so great I could have done both! Have you got me for GSD Club of Devon? 16 June?

Thread: WHATKNOW WILD MAGIC at KRISMOSS - Makher. (krismoss) Posted: 17/02/2012 18:52:36

WHATKNOW WILD MAGIC at KRISMOSS

A.K.A – ‘little Mak’

23.8.96 – 17.2.12

It’s with a heavy heart I write about my beautiful fun-loving ‘little Mak’.  Given peace when old age suddenly got the better of him and renal failure saw no light at the end of the tunnel.

For nearly 16 years my little Mak has brightened my life in a way words cannot describe. He filled our with days happiness and brought more fun than any dog I have ever known .....  his sparkle has seen Paul and me through some sad times and although extremely sensitive to my feelings he simply didn’t seem to have the capacity to be dull.....    Makher giggled his way through life and obedience competition – when he entered a room a light went on.  He may have been small in stature but he had a huge heart, filled with love and happiness and this was reflected in his constantly smiling face.  He was a wonderful dog to work – so attentive and giving, his beautiful chestnut eyes would follow me everywhere – as long as he was with me he could find amusement in anything.  He never clinched a Ticket but he won a sack-full of open Cs every year.  In his retirement he won the hearts of many people and could persuade just about any-one to part with their last tit-bit.  He retired at 11 years of age and we were blessed with 5 more years to treasure.

His sparkling soul was too great to be locked in a body which suddenly became so frail.......  I don’t believe that his kindness and magic have just slipped away......

‘Krismoss’ will be a dull place for a while without my little Mak....  but not for long, after nearly 16 years shining here – his spark will return. His beautiful smiley face is etched on my soul and locked in my heart for-ever.....  he really was ‘magic ‘.

Come back soon little man – we need you here.......   Jan & Paul.

I really benefitted from the sessions I had with you last year Alan. I am unable to be at any of the shows you mention but do hope I see you at others later in the year.
